Washington, DC – Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-OH) released the following statement today after the Senate recessed without passing a critical one-month extension of unemployment insurance and 65 percent COBRA subsidy.  Emergency legislation was passed by a unanimous vote in the House yesterday, but Senator Bunning (R-KY) put a block on the legislation, preventing a vote on the bill in the Senate.  As a result, many Ohio families and families across this great nation will be left without this vital lifeline when their benefits expire at midnight on Sunday, February 28th.

“It is beyond cruel and difficult to comprehend how we have come to the place where the unconscionable actions of one U.S. Senator can effectively prevent our country from temporarily helping jobless Americans from accessing critically needed benefits because he does not believe it is an emergency.  It is impossible to fathom how Senator Bunning could conclude that American families suffering from unemployment during these challenging times do not need these lifeline benefits.  And the fact that this one Senator could block consideration on this vital legislation makes it more clear than ever that the Senate is not working and is in need of serious reform.”
